Stewards of the Earth

This past fall, over 15,000 scientists from 184 different countries issued a warning to humanity… It is the second public notice of its kind, the first issued in 1992.  In 1992 scientists warned that “a great change in our stewardship of Earth and the life on it is required if vast human misery is to be avoided.” Their statement discussed concerns regarding ozone depletion, freshwater resources, marine life, ocean dead zones, forest loss, destruction of biodiversity, climate change and population.  25 years later William J. Ripple, from Oregon State University, and 15,000+ other world scientists warn that humanity has “failed to make sufficient progress in generally solving these foreseen environmental challenges” and have “unleashed a mass extinction event...

I consider myself to be a pretty hard worker, but recognize that the cultural path of least resistance on which I walk has felt more like a water slide at times.   I will never know what it’s like to walk through life as a woman. But I will always know what it’s like to defend them and declare myself a proud feminist to anyone who will listen, which right now feels like an...

Feature: Lucy Cullen of Terus on Food Waste Reduction

Approximately $31 Billion dollars worth of food is said to be wasted every year within Canada. Yet CBC’s marketplace reports that 850,000 Canadians use food banks monthly. Approximately half of this food waste is lost along the value chain, the other half wasted domestically within Canadian households. Global News painted a pretty good picture of the issue in their 2016 report. Annually, “Canadians waste about 183 kilograms of solid food per person, equivalent to more than six million tonnes – about the weight of one million full-grown elephants.” !?!? When food waste goes to landfill, it produces methane gas which is significantly more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide.      October 16-22, 2017 is Waste Reduction...
